There are many splendid carnivals around the world, but nowhere else the costumes are so opulent, stylish and <strong>aristocratic<\/strong> as here. In most places, it\u2019s all about looking funny and colourful, crazy and sparkly \u2013 but not in Venice. Here \u201cfunny\u201d is out of place. It\u2019s all about superior elegance, <strong>mystery and magic<\/strong>. There is nothing like it.<\/p>\n<p>For several weeks every year, the famous narrow streets, canal banks, bridges and squares of Venice become populated by magical outworldly crowd.\u00a0<strong>Queens, kings, harlequins and mysterious creatures <\/strong>are strolling all around,\u00a0covered with <a href=\"https:\/\/euroviajar.com\/en\/shopping-in-venice\/\">masks<\/a>, opulence<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The beginning of the Venice Carnival was a huge <strong>victory of the\u00a0Republic of Venice\u00a0<\/strong>in the battle against Aquileia in <strong>1162<\/strong>. Crowds of Venetians celebrated the victory by dancing and singing in Saint Mark\u2019s\u00a0Square \u2013 and it gradually turned into an annual tradition. Over the centuries, it developed into its opulent and ostentatious Renaissance form that survived until nowadays. One of the unknown fact about it is that it became strictly <strong>forbidden by the\u00a0Holy Roman Emperor<\/strong> and then the Emperor of Austria in 1797, and <strong>for over a century, it vanished<\/strong>. It was invented in the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_de_Lorme\">Charles de Lorme<\/a>, French physician who treated <strong>\u201cblack death\u201d patients<\/strong>. This mask with its long hollow bird-like beak served as an early \u201cgas mask\u201d prototype. The beak contained the mixture of aromatic herbs to protect doctors from inhaling the air around the plague patients. The eye holes were covered with crystal discs, so they look like spectacles. It brings upon a variety of advantages of breaking the rules and enjoying <strong>freedom of forbidden acts<\/strong>, which in the past were anything of \u201csinful\u201d character: secret lovers\u2019 encounters, man dressing up as women, and even <strong>murders<\/strong>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In the society divided into the<strong> extremely rigid social classes<\/strong>, it offered a unique opportunity to meet and mingle between higher and lower classes, while hiding somebody\u2019s own class, as well as <strong>age or even gender<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the Carnival, so-called \u201csumptuary laws\u201d \u2013 <strong>moral rules<\/strong> regulating consumption and restraining extravagance and luxury, <strong>were suspended<\/strong>. And so it was legal and <strong>unpunishable<\/strong> to dress not according to the usual laws and behave exceeding the everyday limits. There were several religious festivities in which they were legal to wear. A Turkish acrobat managed to walk on a rope all the way up to the Campanile of Saint Mark\u2019s\u00a0Square from a boat anchored on the pier, then he reached the balcony of the Palazzo Ducale, giving the tributes to the Doge. <strong>The spectators went crazy \u2013 nothing like that was ever seen before.<\/strong>\u00a0And since then, Venetians demanded a similar show \u2013 called the <strong>Turk\u2019s Descent<\/strong>, every year. Hence, it has become an official annual ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Through the centuries, the event has undergone numerous variations. The acrobatics turned into a descent on a rope. So what is the Flight of the Angel? An artist (almost always female) or a celebrity, wearing a lavish Carnival outfit, secured by a metal cable, slides slowly from the Campanile towards Saint Mark\u2019s\u00a0Square, over the heads of the crowds watching the spectacle. It signals the official opening of the celebrations of the Venice Carnival on Saint Mark\u2019s\u00a0Square.<\/p>\n<p>A week after, a similar spectacle is repeated, called <strong>The Flight of the Eagle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>3.
